Course Description

Formerly: ESL C083N. This is a listening comprehension, oral communication, and pronunciation course for high-intermediate and advanced-level English Language Learning (ELL)/English as a Second Language (ESL) students. Emphasis is placed on participating in class discussions, developing note-taking skills, and responding to short lectures, dialogues, and narratives. This course builds necessary skills for workplace, academic, and social situations. ADVISORY: Students who have completed ESL C043N Speaking and Listening 2B with a Pass are encouraged to enroll in this course or new students are advised to complete the ESL placement process to determine their initial placement. (NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE.) Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Participate in discussions by asking and answering appropriate questions.
  2. Take notes while listening to lectures, dialogues, and narratives.
  3. Develop proficiency in pronouncing phonemes and using correct English language stress, pitch, and intonation patterns.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Take accurate notes on the main ideas and supporting details of lectures, conversations, speeches, or news reports and report this information orally and/or in writing.
  • 2. Participate actively and effectively in discussions on academic and non-academic topics.
  • 3. Demonstrate fluency in reading and speaking, enunciating English phonemes accurately, and showing control of pitch, stress,and intonation.

Lecture Content

Listening Practice Take notes on a lecture, dialogue, or narrative. Listen for the main idea and specific details. Categorize specific details. Speaking Practice Ask and answer questions about a lecture, dialogue, or narrative. Discuss the main idea and specific details. Paraphrase the main idea and supporting details. Summarize the main idea and supporting details. Pronunciation Skills Practice pronouncing vowel and consonant sounds. Practice correct word stress and pitch. Practice correct stress and intonation patterns in sentences. Practice linking and common reductions.

Instructional Techniques

Class sessions may include lectures; discussions; interactive role-plays; and individual, pair, small-group, and whole-class speaking and listening activities.

Reading Assignments

Students research class topics and report findings.

Students take notes on topics and report their findings.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students complete assigned readings to prepare for in-class activities and/or tests and quizzes.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students listen to and analyze an audio recording or video on a topic. Students discuss and defend their opinions.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students listen to and take notes on an audio or video selection and answer questions in paragraph form.

ESL: Master's degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelor's degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
