Course Description

Formerly: ESL C020N. This is a very basic course for low-beginning non-native English speakers focusing on English language skills necessary for simple reading, writing, listening, and speaking tasks in classroom situations. Emphasis on correct sentence structure, basic vocabulary, reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and correct pronunciation. ADVISORY: Students are advised to complete the ESL Guided Self-Placement in order to select their initial course level. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Correctly follow written or auditory 3-step directions.
  2. Compose grammatically correct sentences in the present, present progressive, and past tense.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Follow written and oral directions.
  • 2. Produce written and oral grammatically-correct sentences with simple present, present progressive,and past-tense verbs.
  • 3. Ask and answer simple questions verbally to communicate needs.
  • 4. Recognize and produce targeted initial and final sounds.
  • 5. Use basic vocabulary related to personal, workplace, and school situations.
  • 6. Identify and use basic computer and Internet vocabulary.

Instructional Techniques

Class sessions may include short, simple lectures and class discussions, interactive role-playing exercises, conversations and tasks in pairs and small groups, individual reading and writing assignments, listening and note-taking exercises, pronunciation exercises, and multi-media exercises and presentations.

Reading Assignments

Students complete reading exercises to answer comprehension questions, locate information, or prepare for class discussions and writing assignments.

Writing Assignments

Students write complete sentences to questions presented orally and in writing. Students write simple guided paragraphs in response to prompts.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students research assigned topics on the Internet and report the information to the class.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

In reading and writing exercises, students locate relevant information in response to questions.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students write answers to written and oral questions in complete sentences. Students write simple guided paragraphs in response to written questions.

ESL: Master's degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelor's degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND master's degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
