Course Description
This course is designed to provide non-native English speaking students additional opportunities to master various advanced grammatical structures. In this course, students continue to expand their understanding of advanced complex sentence structures and will complete a comprehensive review of the verb tense-aspect-voice system. Students will practice identifying and producing these target structures in spontaneous oral and written communication. This is an open-entry course. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

- Students will write sentences using advanced verb-related structures such as modals, passive voice and conditionals.
- Students will be able to edit sentences for punctuation and verb-tense-aspect-voice errors.
- Students will use a variety of advanced structures to correctly incorporate ideas from an outside source, including noun clauses, direct and indirect speech, passive and active voice

Reading Assignments
Students will spend approximately 1 hour per week studying the target structures as used by professional writers and the effect various grammar structures have on style and delivery.
Writing Assignments
Students will spend a minimum of 3 hours each composing and editing written academic and nonacademic texts applying the target grammar structures.
Out-of-class Assignments
Students will spend approximately 2 hours per week preparing oral texts and editing for correct use of the target grammar structures.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will evaluate the needs of an imaginary rhetorical situation and select the most appropriate sentence structures to convey meaning.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will apply their knowledge of advanced sentence structures and the tense-aspect-voice system to edit their writings and oral presentations.
Eligible Disciplines
ESL: Masters degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis, or education with a TESL emphasis OR bachelors degree in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND masters degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech, or any foreign language OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
