Course Description

This course includes the instruction and practice of jazz dance techniques in the contemporary style. Across the floor exercises, center floor combinations, and class choreography emphasize musicality, stylistic variation, and movement dynamics. The style of movement reflects popular music and culture. ADVISORY: DANC G125. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Lab Content

Warm-up Exercises--Standing Back and hamstring stretches--sagittal plane--parallel and turned-out Calf stretches--parallel and turned out Foot--metatarsal stretches, tendus, pass s, and brushes Demi and grand pli s Side stretches--frontal and transverse planes Flexibility stretches for the hip socket area Front of the body (abdominal and thigh) stretches Torso contractions and back and abdominal stretches exercises Isolations--head, shoulder and shoulder girdle, ribcage, hips, arms, and ankle Grand battements in all directions Fan kicks and jumps Floor Stretches Hip socket rotation exercises Back flexibility exercises Hamstring stretches Stretches in second position Abdominal exercises Quadriceps stretch and strength exercises Moving Through Space Chass Pas de Bourr es Jazz walks Directional changes and weight shifts Moving isolations for coordination Chain turns, pirouettes, and piqu turns Front, side, and back leaps Combinations with complicated rhythmic structure

Eligible Disciplines

Dance: Master's degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelor's degree in any of the above AND master's degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
