Course Description

Performing Dance Ensemble IV provides an opportunity for advanced level dancers to improve their performing and career skills through rehearsals culminating in performances on campus and in the R. B. Moore Theatre. There may be additional performances and lecture-demonstrations in public schools and the community. This is the culmination of the Performing Dance Ensemble so includes Individualized assignments and responsibilities in the rehearsing, choreographing, staging, costuming, publicizing and promoting concerts and performances. ADVISORY: DANC A233. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Demonstrate improved dance skills with the ability to perform with expressiveness, musicality and advanced technique.
  2. Show improved ability in performance production--rehearsing students,choreographing or re-staging, publicizing and promoting concerts.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate increased dance skills with the ability to retain and perform complex choreography with the expressiveness, musicality and technical accuracy demanded of the dance piece.
  • 2. Show improved skills in the ability to be responsible for various tasks needed in performance production--rehearsing students,choreographing or re-staging, publicizing and promoting concerts.
  • 3. Demonstrate an understanding of and knowledge about the cultural background of dances learned in the course.

Instructional Techniques

Lecture and class discussions, rehearsal of set combinations and choreography, audition process, assignments including dance research and production elements, performances of choreography.

Reading Assignments

Students will spend approximately 1.5 hours a week on reading assignments: articles in books or on the internet that will help character development in a cultural context and increase their understanding of specific dance genres.

Writing Assignments

Students will spend approximately 1.5 hour per week on writing assignments.  Papers include dance journals and written evaluations of the following: concerts  the performance experience  the dancers personal growth during the semester

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will attend dance concerts and dance and/or cultural events for approximately 10 hours a semester.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students are required to turn in written critiques of dance concerts that ask students to compare and describe dancers, choreography and production elements and to evaluate dance performances by artistic standards.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Dance skills are evaluated in auditions, mid-terms and concert performance.  Written journal and self-evaluation.
