Course Description
A supervised internship related to classroom-based learning at a world dance-related work site. Students should be ready to teach world dance classes and must have taken DANC A147 or DANC A148. Recommendation: Ideally, students in the second level of internship should have taken DANC A210, Dance Methodology. PREREQUISITE: DANC A147 or concurrent enrollment or DANC A148 or concurrent enrollment or DANC A218. ADVISORY: DANC A210. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Demonstrate the ability to teach world dance classes with confidence and professionalism.
Course Objectives
- 1. Conduct a search for appropriate internship site related to education and career goals.
- 2. Dress appropriately for internship site.
- 3. Interview at an internship site and present oneself professionally.
- 4. Follow employment policies of internship site.
- 5. Observe the teacher's skills in the work environment.
- 6. Apply skills learned in the classroom under actual working conditions.
- 7. Write measurable learning objectives.
- 8. Evaluate accomplishment of learning objectives and effectiveness of internship site and program.
- 9. Maintain a record of internship experiences and time.
- 10. Write lesson plans appropriate to the skill level and focus of selected classes.
- 11. Write a self-evaluation detailing strengths and weakness and plan for dance career.
Lecture Content
Career search skills Research 5 work sites related to career goal through library, placement center, online job sites and newspaper or professional publications Interview professional dancers, teachers or studio owners. Determine two sites that best match student skills and interests Planning and organization skills Write measurable learning objectives related to personal and internship site needs Write what is to be accomplished, how it will be accomplished, how it will be evaluated and completion date Determine two sites that best match student skills and interests Arrange for site interview On-site interviewing skills Communication skills and ways to present personal strengths and goals matched with the site Dress appropriately Complete paperwork (resume, letters, application) Arrange time for a follow up Employment skills Appropriate dress Knowledge of work place rules and regulations Knowledge of absence policies and adherence to policies Time management within classroom and before and after class Safety concerns and protocols Understanding of supervisor s expectations Communication with supervisor and students Teaching skills Write lesson plans for classes Different skill levels Different styles of dance Assist and teach dance classes Keep a journal of classes taught Observations on student successes and challenges Observations on studio demands and environment
