Course Description
Structured dance rehearsal time in the studio and on stage for a large ensemble choreographic work. Spacing rehearsals, lighting rehearsals, and dress rehearsals, all culminating in a main stage theatrical performance. COREQUISITE: Student must be enrolled in an OCC dance technique class. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Demonstrate the ability to take direction, adapt performance skills from the studio to the concert stage, and work cooperatively in a theater setting.
- Perform as part of a large ensemble, showing progress in dancing unison movement and small features in a public concert with lights, costumes and production elements.
Course Objectives
- 1. Critique dances at a basic level and make suggestions for improvement.
- 2. Dance as part of a large ensemble in a main stage production with costumes and theatrical lighting.
- 3. Demonstrate personal discipline and good work habits as a dancer or choreographer.
- 4. Work cooperatively in a large group rehearsal for a cohesive expression of an artistic idea.
- 5. Demonstrate progress in dancing together in unison, with use of correct spacing, musicality, energy, projection and expression on stage, in stage lighting.
- 6. Demonstrate an increased awareness of the many jobs required in order for dance and stage productions to feel complete and ready for public presentation.
- 7. Demonstrate the ability to process feedback and take direction when rehearsing in both studio and concert venue spaces.
- 8. Learn basic stage performance skills, and receive sufficient practice, support and feedback in order to present a confident performance.
Lecture Content
LECTURE 1. Attendance and participation requirements; discipline and theatre etiquette 2. Safety on stage and in the theatre 2. Wings, legs, light angles, focus and projection 3. Personal goal setting for the individual student and as pertaining to collaboration and teamwork 4. Cueing, entrances, exits 5. Exaggeration of movement and use of space for dramatic effect 6. Critiques and notes 7. Emergency procedures, warm up techniques, injury prevention
Lab Content
LAB 1. Spacing rehearsals for large cast/ensemble a. Studio - Make final detailed changes in choreography as needed b. Stage - Rehearse the completed dance on stage in small sections to get familiar with spacing c. Auditorium – practice entrances and exits from the wings, and/or audience area 2. Lighting rehearsals with costumes for large cast/ensemble a. General area lighting b. Overhead specials, side lighting, front light, back light and dramatic effects c. Cue points, focus, projection and getting accustomed to dancing in theatrical dance lighting d. Set and practice bows and timings for light changes 3. Technical rehearsals with costumes a. Practice movement mechanics in costumes b. Awareness of character, possible costume hazards c. Costume assembly, maintenance, quick changes d. Learn and practice stage make up and hair style specific to the dance 4. Evaluation and critiques a. Personal b. Group c. Instructor and peer d. Experiment with solutions 5. Dress Rehearsal a. Instructional Techniques
Instructor will use the following methodologies: lectures, stage rehearsals, individual mentoring, critiques on choreography and performance during stage rehearsals, production advice and monitoring progress, video viewing and analysis of stage rehearsals, critiques by invited faculty or professionals, journaling, and peer feedback.

Written critiques of performance viewing. (approximately 2 hours per semester.)
Out-of-class Assignments
Additional rehearsals for problem sections and individual performers who need more practice; design and construct costumes, or shop and purchase costumes, costumes alterations (approximately 2 hours per week as an 8 week course).

Application of class performance and production concepts to stage; fine tuning details of choreography; applying critical feedback; written notes and personal application of critiques; written self-evaluation for choreographers

Written self-evaluation for choreographers; application of rehearsal and performance notes; selecting titles, designing costumes, program copy and other problem solving; skill tests – public performances of original choreography on stage
Eligible Disciplines
Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
