Course Description

An intermediate level Mexican Folklórico dance course exploring the stories, experiences, and dances from various regions of Mexico. The focus of this course is on intermediate level movement techniques (footwork, rhythmic patterns, use of props), forms, and performance styles, delving into their historical backgrounds. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Identify and define Intermediate level Mexican folk dance movement vocabulary.
  2. Perform Intermediate level movements and rhythmic patterns of various Mexican folk dances.
  3. Identify and analyze historical and cultural factors of various Mexican folk dances.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify intermediate level Mexican folk dance vocabulary.
  • 2. Demonstrate intermediate technical skills and performance qualities of various Mexican folk dances.
  • 3. Understand and articulate in written form the historical and cultural context of Mexican folk dances of various regions.
  • 4. Identify and embody the variations in movement vocabulary used in dances of different regions and understand their cultural significance.
  • 5. Identify the variations in music, regalia, and props used to represent dances of different regions.
  • 6. Perform- at an intermediate level- different Mexican folk dances.

Procedures and requirements  Continued learning of history and origin of Mexican Folklórico dances  General characteristics of Mexican dances as differentiated from other national folk dances  History of geographical location and regional influences Culture and origin of music, dress, and props representing specific Mexican states and regions.  Self-evaluation  Written critiques

Lab Content

Learn intermediate level dance vocabulary common to various styles of Mexican Folklórico. Learn intermediate level rhythmic patterns. Learn intermediate level floor patterns. Learn the intermediate level carriage of torso, arms and head. Learn intermediate level footwork common to various styles of Mexican Folklórico.  Learn the use of regional costumes and/or props in various styles of Mexican Folklórico.  Learn intermediate level choreography for specific Mexican Folklórico dances. Hone artistry

Reading of historical essays/ articles for written reflection as assigned by instructor. Written Dance critiques on recorded or live performances.

Viewing of films/ videos and reading of historical essays/ articles assigned by instructor.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Written test based on lectures, discussion, and reading assignments. Skills demonstrations. Completions of written assignments- reflections and /or concert critiques. Participation and attendance to embody the principals of the art form.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Written dance critique on recorded or live performance.

Eligible Disciplines

Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
