Course Description
This course provides a study in beginning contemporary commercial dance, principles and terminology. This includes technical warm-up, progressions and beginning stylized dance combinations center floor. This technique course will focus on contemporary dance styles made popular from the television, film and video industry. The course content explores but not limited to dance conditioning, body awareness, flexibility and performance skills. Students are required to attend a live dance performance. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

- Perform contemporary commercial dance exercises and traveling patterns with accurate tehnical execution and style.
- Learn and perform a short dance combination with balance, flexibility, directional changes, phrasing, and rhythmic accuracy.
- Demonstrate correct principles of alignment and articulation of the spine, feet, and legs.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate proper alignment and technique necessary to further the study in contemporary commercial dance.
- 2. Analyze beginning movement phrases in terms of style technique, musicality, and presentation, and dynamically express them with their own bodies.
- 3. Create short movement study demonstrating ability to synthesize concepts learned in class.
- 4. Demonstrate basic concepts of dance: dynamics, coordination, and other elements of dance within the contemporary commercial dance style
- 5. Demonstrate proper classroom etiquette and procedure to further study of dance in general.
Lecture Content
Lecture: Performance etiquette Discuss expected students behavior during warm-up, across the floor, and center exercises. Review etiquette at the theater during the performance Safety Discuss Safety Procedures to avoid body injuries Correct technique, placement, and tracking of knee, ankle, toes Review safety procedures while performing at the theater Style Discuss Commercial Contemporary style, historic influences and trends Discuss the effect of other dance techniques in the commercial contemporary style Discuss the use of Commercial Contemporary style in film, television, and stage presentations Performance and Choreography How to view commercial contemporary dance Writing about dance Elements in commercial contemporary choreography The emotional aspect of performance and choreography Technique What is technique technique and safety technique and performance

Practice all vocabulary as well as combinations, exercises and choreography studied in class. Assessment and critique of current contemporary commercial work, utilizing vocabulary and terminology learned in class. Attend Faculty, Student, and or professional dance concert. (10- 14 hours)

Eligible Disciplines
Dance: Masters degree in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in physical education, any life science, physiology, theater arts, kinesiology, humanities, performing arts, or music OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
