Course Description

An introductory course in Latin dance styles designed to teach cha-cha, merengue, tango, salsa, and other Latin dances. Course will emphasize steps, styling, partnering, rhythm, cultural background materials. The beginning level is appropriate for students of all ages and training. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Understand and Perform the basic movements of two or more Latin dance styles with or without a partner.
  2. Demonstrate proper dance etiquette when selecting and exchanging partners at a beginner level.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate basic cha-cha steps and styling.
  • 2. Demonstrate basic salsa steps and styling.
  • 3. Demonstrate basic waltz steps and styling.
  • 4. Demonstrate basic tango steps and styling.
  • 5. Demonstrate basic marengue steps and styling.
  • 6. Demonstrate basic mambo steps and styling.
  • 7. Demonstrate ability to lead or follow different partners.
  • 8. Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy for each Latin dance taught.
  • 9. Explain in writing historical or cultural information connected with each Latin dance studied.
