Course Description

The fourth clinical rotation in which the students will be placed in a general dentistry and/or dental specialty setting. Students are required to follow the dress code standards required by the program and OSHA mandates. One hour seminar, thirty-two hours weekly for two weeks. PREREQUISITE: DA A165 or concurrent enrollment. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Perform all aspects of four-handed dentistry, assisting in general and/or dental specialty at clinical competency level.
2. Demonstrate through application of related patient care skills, knowledge of OSHA mandated infection control protocols.

Course Objectives

• I Demonstrate a well groomed appearance and will dress accordingly to the requirements of the dental assisting program and OSHA mandated protocols.
• II Demonstrate the ability to adapt to various office routines, follow directions, accept constructive criticism and successfully work with the patient and the dental team.
• III Properly perform to the satisfaction of the dentist and the supervising instructor the following chairside procedures, lab procedures, and business procedures as taught in the program.
• IV Perform the following business office procedures as directed by the dentist or staff:
• V Perform the following procedures: Pour and trim models; Construct custom trays; Polish removable appliances.
• VI Utilizing appropriate infection control procedures, expose, process and mount dental X-rays using film or digital systems according to diagnostic quality standards.
• VII Perform RDA duties taught to laboratory and preclinica competency to clinical competency according to clinical site needs.

Lab Content

The following is completed during the clinical experience: Prepare operatory, seat and dismiss patient, clean/disinfect operatory. Clean, disinfect, sterilize instruments, prepare tray set-ups and armamentarium as needed for patient care procedures. Chart and record treatment Manipulate dental restorative and impression materials. Assist in rubber dam application. Give oral hygiene and post operative instructions. Assist the dentist utilizing four-handed chairside principles, maintaining a clear operating field, transferring instruments and manipulating dental materials as dictated by patient treatment procedures. Demonstrate a professional attitude and ethical behavior related to patient care. Assist with specialties procedures (1) Oral surgery (2) Orthodontic (3) Endodontic (4) Pedodontic (5) Periodontic Greet and check in patients verifying personal information, according to HIPAA regulations. Demonstrate effective communication skills in telephone technique. Describe and demonstrate the process of scheduling appointments for maximum productivity. Assist with recall system. Identify how to use the filing systems, and demonstrate proper filing protocols. Demonstrate making appropriate financial arrangements with patients, receiving payments and assisting in collection procedures. Pour and trim models. Construct custom trays. Polish removable appliances. Place bases and liners on sound dentin. Remove excess cement from supragingival surfaces of teeth with a hand instrument. Size stainless steel crowns, fabricate provisional crowns, and cement temporarily. Placement of temporary fillings. Place and remove orthodontic separators, place and ligate archwires. Take orthodontic measurements. Place post ext raction and periodontal dressings. Perform Coronal Polishing under the direct supervision of the dentist. Perform Pit and Fissure sealant procedures under direct supervision of the dentist.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

1.    Clinical Evaluation –Evaluation sheets used by the student/instructor to assess each student in terms of four handed dentistry, comprehensive dental knowledge, professional appearance, performance attitude and duties and skills.  Evaluations are used as the basis of instructor/student reports and discussions.2.    Reports – Each student is responsible for one written weekly report pertaining to patient, treatment and procedures, time involved for each, and the variety of dental assisting experiences completed.  Reports are evaluated for student understanding of procedures, correct terminology and participation. and demonstrate the students ability to discuss experiences, problems and effective communications as a member of the dental team3.    Standards – 100% attendance and participation in the clinical facilities following stated standards of performance, completion of all clinical reports, must be completed for a passing grade.

Eligible Disciplines

Dental technology (dental assisting, dental hygiene): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
