Course Description
The third in a series of opportunities for clinical practice of concepts in dental assisting. Each student will be assigned to a dental office for either general dentistry or a specialty practice. Students are required to follow the dress code standards set up by the program according to ADA guidelines-and OSHA mandates. COREQUISITE: DA A115, DA A125, DA A145, and DA A163. Lecture, 108 hours clinical. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Perform all aspects of four-handed dentistry, assisting in general and/or dental specialty at clinical competency level.
- Demonstrate through application of related patient care skills, knowledge of OSHA mandated infection control protocols.
Course Objectives
- I Demonstrate a well groomed appearance and will dress accordingly to the requirements of the dental assisting program and OSHA mandated protocols.
- II Demonstrate the ability to adapt to various office routines, follow directions, accept constructive criticism, and successfully work with the patient and the dental team.
- III Properly perform to the satisfaction of the dentist and the supervising clinical instructor/dentist the following chairside procedures, lab procedures, and business procedures as taught in the program.
- III. 1. Prepare operatory, seat patient and dismiss patient, clean/disinfect operatory.
- III. 2. Clean, disinfect, sterilize instruments, prepare tray set-ups and armamentarium as needed for patient care procedures.
- III. 3. Assist the dentist utilizing four-handed chairside principles, maintaining a clear operating field, transferring instruments,and manipulating dental materials as dictated by patient treatment procedures.
- III. 4. Chart and record treatment.
- III. 5. Assist in rubber dam application
- III. 6. Perform fluoride treatment as directed by supervising dentist.
- III. 7. Fabricate provisional temporary crowns or temporary fillings under direct supervision of clinical instructor/dentist
- III. 8. Assist with specialties procedures as dictated by specific clinical facility: (1) Oral surgery (2) Orthodontic (3) Endodontic (4) Pedodontic (5) Periodontic Give appropriate post operative instructions
- IV Perform the following business office procedures as directed by the dentist or staff:
- IV. 1. Greet and Check in patients, verifying personal information, update health history, and handle chart according to HIPAA regulations.
- IV. 2. Demonstrate effective communication skills in telephone technique.
- IV. 3. Describe and demonstrate the process of scheduling appointments for maximum productivity.
- IV. 4. Identify how to use the filing systems, and demonstrate proper filing protocols.
- IV. 5. Assist with recall system
- IV. 6. Receive payments and assist patients with financial arrangements and collection procedures.
- IV. 7. Assist with insurance billing procedures
- V Perform the following procedures:
- V. 1. Take preliminary impressions, pour and trim models
- V. 2. construct custom trays
- V. 3. polish removable appliances
- VI Maintain general office cleanliness, clean and sterilize instruments, and prepare tray set-ups as indicated by the office.
- VII Expose, process, and mount dental X-rays according to diagnostic quality standards, using either film or digital systems

Reading Assignments
Students will be assigned reading related to clinical experience.
Writing Assignments
Maintain written daily log and reports of the clinical procedures in which they assisted. Attendance logs and evaluation forms will be completed. Clinical seminar will include assignments related to exerience of clinical rotation.
Out-of-class Assignments
Written journals, timesheet completion, homework and worksheet assignments.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
1. Clinical Evaluation - Evaluation instruments used by the student/instructor to evaluate each student in terms of four handed dentistry, comprehensive dental knowledge, professional appearance, performance attitude and duties and skills. Evaluations are used as the basis of instructor/student reports and discussions.2. Reports - Each student is responsible for one written weekly report pertaining to patient, treatment and procedures, time involved for each, and the variety of dental assisting experiences completed. Reports are evaluated for student understanding of procedures, correct terminology and participation. Demonstrate ability to discuss experiences, problems and effective communications as a member of the dental team. 3. Standards - 100% attendance and participation in the clinical facilities following stated standards of performance, completion of all clinical reports, completed for a grade of "Credit."
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Maintain written daily log and reports of the clinical procedures in which they assisted. Attendance and evaluation forms will be completed to document student hours and performance.
Eligible Disciplines
Dental technology (dental assisting, dental hygiene): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
