Course Description
The first clinical experience in the practice of dental assisting. Each student will be assigned to UCLA School of Dentistry or in dental office. Students are required to follow the dress code standards set up by the program, UCLA School of Dentistry, dental office, and Cal-DOSH mandates. Eight hours weekly for eight weeks with one hour seminar weekly. Offered on a grade basis only. COREQUISITE: DA A101, DA A110, DA A120, DA A130 and DA A140. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Apply learned knowledge and skills in performing some aspects of four-handed dentistry, assisting in general dentistry practice.
- Demonstrate through application of related patient care skills knowledge of Cal-DOSH mandated infection control protocols.
Course Objectives
- I Demonstrate professional conduct and grooming as prescribed by the dental profession and stated criteria.
- I. 1. Practice infection control protocols as mandated by Cal-DOSH regulations.
- I. 2. Prepare instrumentation and trays required for a particular procedure, and obtain the additional supplies not on the tray.
- I. 3. Assist the dentist or dental student by recording the treatment on the patient record.
- I. 4. Properly perform to the satisfaction of the dentist or dental student and the supervising instructor the following chairside procedures as taught in the formal program:
- I. 5. Prepare operatory, seat and dismiss patient, clean/disinfect operatory.
- I. 6. Prepare armamentarium.
- I. 7. Maintain a clear operating field, transfer instruments and oral evacuate.
- I. 8. Manipulate dental materials including various cements.
- I. 9. Assist in rubber dam and moisture control applications.
- I. 10. Give oral hygiene and post operative instructions.
- I. 11. Take alginate impressions and pour models
- I. 12. Deliver and retrieve rotary instruments and accessory items.
- I. 13. Correctly dispose of sharps and amalgam scrap according to OSHA guidelines
- I. 14. Deliver and Receive a variety of instruments using appropriate instrument transfer techniqes.
- I. 15. Process and mount radiographs as directed by dentist or dental student.
- I. 16. Beginning in Week 12 expose periapical and bitewing radiographs as directed by dentist or dental student.
- II Problem Solving
- II. 1. Discuss reasons why conflicts must be resolved.
- II. 2. Demonstrate the ability to discuss and solve a personal problem between the assistant and the dentist.
- II. 3. Discuss ways to solve problems within the dental team with sensitivity for all those involved.
- II. 4. Recognize the barriers that prevent effective communication between the dentist, the dental assistant, and the patient.
- II. 5. Discuss how an individuals attitude toward teeth and dental care can present a problem.
- II. 6. Define and discuss methods of sending and receiving messages within oneself and other.
- II. 7. Discussion of various approaches and theories to achieve motivation and persuasion.
- II. 8. Include first impressions, listening and evaluating responses.
Lecture Content
Perform properly to the satisfaction of the dentist and the supervising instructor the following chairside procedures and lab procedures as taught in the program. Seat patient and dismiss patient, clean/disinfect operatory necessary for patient care procedures. Assist the dentist utilizing four-handed chairside principles, maintaining a clear operating field, transferring instruments, oral evacuating and manipulation of dental materials dictated by the procedure. Chart and record treatment. Assist in rubber dam application. Give oral hygiene and post operative procedures. Take alginate impressions Assist with CAD/CAM fabrication of fixed prosthodontics Maintain general office cleanliness, clean, disinfect and sterilize instruments, and prepare tray set-ups as indicated by the office and procedure. Operate Autoclave correctly Correct use of disinfecting solutions Correct use of ultrasonic unit Prepare appropriate procedure tray set-ups Perform the following business office procedures as directed by the dentist or staff. Telephone techniques Filing Perform the following laboratory procedures: pour and trim models from impressions construct custom trays X ray Duties Process and mount x rays utilizing appropriate Cal-DOSH mandated infection control protocols. Interpersonal Skills/Work Ethics Demonstrate Professional work ethics Professional appearance and conduct as prescribed by stated criteria Ability to relate to patients and problem solve using appropriate conflict resolution techniques

Instructional Techniques
Students will be observed and evaluated by clinical instructor and supervising dentist or dental student. Students will receive appropriate feedback during the clinical day and related seminar.
Reading Assignments
Students are expected to spend a minimum of two hours outside of class in preparation of each hour of class.
Writing Assignments
Maintain a daily written log of the clinical procedures in which they assisted. Maintain monthly attendance sheets and clinical task evaluation forms. Complete weekly written reports pertaining to patient, treatment and procedures, time involved for each, and the variety of dental assisting experiences completed. Approximately 2 hours a week to complete written reports. Complete worksheet assignments as described by the instructor.
Out-of-class Assignments
Appropriate outside assignments include assigned readings in texts, outlining text material and reviewing for exams. Approximately 1 hour a week for completion of outside assignments.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
1. Clinical Evaluation - Evaluation forms used by the student/instructor to evaluate each student in terms of four handed dentistry, comprehensive dental knowledge, professional appearance, performance attitude and duties and skills. Evaluations are used as the basis of instructor/student reports, discussions and grade.2. Reports - Each student is responsible for one written weekly report pertaining to patient, treatment and procedures, time involved for each, and the variety of dental assisting experiences completed. Reports are evaluated for student understanding of procedures, correct terminology and participation. 3. Standards - 100% attendance and participation in the clinical facilities following stated standards of performance, completion of all clinical reports, completed for letter grade. 4. Students may be removed from the clinical site and issued a failing grade for the following reasons:a. Excessive absences or tardinessb. Endangering a patient, staff or faculty member c. Direct insubordinationd. Inappropriate dress or behavior

Eligible Disciplines
Dental technology (dental assisting, dental hygiene): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
