Course Description
Discussion of current concepts of preventive dentistry. Etiology of dental disease, nutrition, oral hygiene techniques, and home care are covered in detail. Applied psychology for the dental patient is presented. Includes community dental project. COREQUISITE: DA A110. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Analyze and relate the correlation among nutrition, oral physiotherapy, and etiology of dental disease to preventive dental care for the patient.
Course Objectives
- 1. State the rationale and philosophy of preventive dentistry.
- 2. Describe the complexity of dental disease and current theories of its etiology.
- 3. Describe and recognize plaque in terms of morphology, manner of formation, and pathological implications and plan a plaque control program.
- 4. Identify the various oral physiotherapeutic aides and procedures and instruct patients in the use of oral physiotherapeutic devices.
- 5. Describe caries preventive aspects of fluoride.
- 6. Demonstrate use of automated caries detection device and materials to gather information for diagnosis by the dentist.
- 7. Discuss and describe the method of clinical dietary analysis and differentiate between cariogenic and non-cariogenic foods and drinks.
- 8. Describe and discuss reasons systemic nutrition and food factors play a role in periodontal disease
- 9. Design a comprehensive preventive program to be presented to an individual and a group.
- 10. Apply the psychology appropriate to the needs of the patient and demonstrate techniques used in preventive dentistry for the developmentally disabled.

1. The student will pass a written exam at a minimum of 75% competency level.2. Student, singularly or in groups of two or more will present a preventive dentistry project to a local elementary school.3. Completion of all reading, written assignments, and preventive visual aid.
