Course Description
Emphasis on expanded functions for the registered dental assistant. Laboratory practice and preclinical evaluations. Students will practice mock written testing in preparation for state licensing board examinations. PREREQUISITE: DA A110 and DA A120. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Demonstrate minimum competency levels in all laboratory, preclinical and clinical skills.
- Complete a simulated Registered Dental Assistant written and practical exam with a passing score of 75% or better.
Course Objectives
- 1. Fabricate, adjust, cement and remove indirect provisional restorations, including stainless steel crowns when used as a provisional restoration on a typodont.
- 2. Demonstrate placing bases and liners on a typodont.
- 3. Demonstrate competency of 75% or better on the mock RDA written
- 4. Scan a model using CAD/CAM Digital Scanner
- 5. Competently take prescribed extra oral photographs using digital extra oral camera
- 6. Fabricate a crown using Cerec Primemill and speedfire unit

Instructional Techniques

Reading Assignments
Students will read assigned textbook chapters, PPT, student workbook questions for review and laboratory procedure assignments, as well as content handouts as deemed necessary by instructor. Approximately 3 hours a week is necessary to complete reading assignments.
Writing Assignments
1. Students will complete evaluations on their laboratory work and perform peer evaluations on lab assignments prior to instructor evaluations 2. Keep written lab manual assignments on all laboratory procedures. 3. Complete simulated written patient case studies as assigned. 4. Approximately 2 hours a week is necessary to complete writing assignments.
Out-of-class Assignments
Read assigned texts, complete worksheets, view assigned supplemental videos/DVDs, handouts provided by instructor, and review for exams. Approximately 2 hours a week is necessary to complete any out-of-class assignments.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
1. Theory, written exams, and assignments2. Laboratory: a. Achievement of laboratory objectives will be measured by laboratory evaluation tools received by students. b. A clinical mock RDA examination will be given using the Dental Board of California Committee on Dental Auxiliaries established criteria.3. Grading a. A mastery level 75% of laboratory and lecture must be achieved in order to pass course with a minimum grade of C.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
1. Students will complete evaluations on their laboratory work and perform peer evaluations on lab assignments. 2. Keep written lab manual on all clinical procedures. 3. Complete written patient case studies as assigned. 4. Students will scan a model for practice with the CAD Itero scanner.
Eligible Disciplines
Dental technology (dental assisting, dental hygiene): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
