Course Description

This is a continuation of DA A110 Chairside Techniques 1 with an emphasis on dental specialties, and application of coronal polish for state certification. PREREQUISITE: DA A110. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Apply the principles of chairside assisting and OSHA mandated infection control protocols to the associated dental specialty procedures to perform competently in those areas of patient care.
2. Perform coronal polishing procedure according to state standards and pass written examination for certification.
3. Apply the principles of dental specialties in oral surgery, orthodontics, pedodontics, periodontics, and endodontics to perform competently in those areas of patient care.

Course Objectives

• 1. List and describe procedures of veneers,crown and bridge techniques and demonstrate the ability to assist the dentist in these procedures.
• 2. List and describe the various procedures used in removable prosthodontics and demonstrate the ability to assist in these procedures.
• 3. Describe the type of dental implants procedures for dental implants and ideal candidates for implants.
• 4. Explain the various procedures of endodontics procedures and identify the instruments used in those procedures.
• 5. Identify and select the correct instruments for different oral surgery procedures and assisting with these procedures.
• 6. Select and arrange armamentarium used in pedodontics for pulp capping, pulpotomy, and pulpectomy procedures in pedodontics and demonstrate the correct assisting procedures.
• 7. Demonstrate and explain the psychology in dealing with a child with behavior problems in the dental office.
• 8. Select and arrange the correct armamentarium used in periodontics.
• 9. Demonstrate knowledge of the various procedures used in orthodontics and demonstrate the ability to assist in these procedures.and take facebow transfers including bite registrations.
• 10. List the clinical indicators and contra-indicators for coronal polishing, commonly used abrasive agents, and steps in effective coronal polishing procedure. Select and assemble coronal polishing armamentarium for clinical patients.
• 11. Perform coronal polishing to clinical proficiency based on State standards.for certification.
• 12. Describe and demonstrate topical fluoride application to clinical proficiency.
• 13. Demonstrate cleaning and polishing of prosthetic appliances.
• 14. Demonstrate adjustment of dentures extra-orally
• 15. Demonstrate placement and removal of orthodontic separators on a typodont.
• 16. Demonstrate placement and removal of ligsture ties and arch wires on a typodont.
• 17. Demonstrate the application of facebow transfer and measurements with associated bite registration.
• 18. Explain and describe the electrosurgery procedure utilized in fixed prosthodontics.
• 19. Adjust removable prosthodontics i.e. dentures and partials extra-orally.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

1.    Theory:  quizzes and exams2.    Laboratory skills    a.    Achievement of laboratory objectives will be by laboratory evaluation sheets given to students.    b.    A clinical examination will be based on written criteria and expected competency levels of 75%.3.    Grading:    A mastery level 75% of theory and laboratory must be achieved in order to pass course with minimum grade of C.
