Course Description

Four handed dentistry. History of the dental profession, Dental Practice Act, law and ethics. Charting, infection control protocols, sterilization procedures, use and maintenance of dental operatory equipment. Laboratory experience includes basic application of operative procedures. Course requires purchase of an appropriate clinical uniform and patient care safety goggles. COREQUISITE: DA A120. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Describe and demonstrate restorative dentistry principles while utilizing four-handed, sit-down applications, implementing appropriate patient care and specific infection control procedures in dentistry as mandated by OSHA.

Course Objectives

• 1. Identify the principles and demonstrate the operation, use and maintenance of dental equipment routinely used in general practice in accordance with the manufacturers direction.
• 2. Describe and demonstrate the principles of four handed sit down dentistry. State the principles of work simplification, of motion and areas of activity.
• 3. Demonstrate seating the health team in their position.
• 4. Demonstrate proficiency in all steps of instrument transfer.
• 5. Prepare dental operatory and seat and dismiss the patient.
• 6. Demonstrate correct use of the high velocity oral evacuation system.
• 7. Given a patient, recognize and chart obvious carious lesions, missing teeth, and existing restorations.
• 8. Demonstrate completing a health patient history and related knowledge for patient care.
• 9. List correctly GV Blacks Classifications of Cavities.
• 10. Demonstrate compliance to OSHA regulations that governs the practice of dentistry.
• 11. Demonstrate the procedure for waste disposal as identified by OSHA.
• 12. Demonstrate the correct placement of the rubber dam using various clamps.
• 13. Demonstrate foundational knowledge of an amalgam, composite and permanent restoration procedure including instrumentation, assisting, and preparations indicated.
• 14. Demonstrate the correct placement and wedging of an toffelmire retainer and matrix band.
• 15. Identify the various types of aesthetic restorations including instrumentation, placement and preparations indicated.
• 16. Identify instruments, including GV Blacks Instrument formula; explain their use and care required in the dental practice.
• 17. Given a specific procedure, assemble an accurate and complete patient treatment tray set-up.
• 18. Demonstrate the care of the handpiece and the placement and removal of various types. List in writing the types of handpieces, attachments and their care.
• 19. Demonstrate the role of the dental assistant in loading/transfer retrieval and unloading an anesthesia syringe and application of topical anesthetic.
• 20. Discuss the history of dentistry and significant contributors to the field.

Lab Content

Identify the principles and demonstrate the operation, use and maintenance of dental equipment routinely used in general practice in accordance with the manufacturers direction. Demonstrate the principles of four-handed dentistry, appropriate ergonomics, work simplification and areas of activity. Demonstrate seating the health team in their position. Demonstrate proficiency in all steps of instrument transfer. Prepare operatory, greeting the patient, seat and dismiss the patient. Demonstrate correct use of the oral evacuation system. Chart obvious carious lesions, missing teeth, existing restorations, periodontal measurements and understand treatment plan protocols. Demonstrate accurate completion of a patient health history and chart components utilizing HIPPA standards. Correctly use and chart with GV Blacks cavity classifications Demonstrate compliance to OSHA regulations that govern dentistry while completing chairside assisting/patient care functions. Demonstrate the procedure for waste disposal as identified by OSHA. Demonstrate correct treatment room tear down, disinfection and set up for patient care. Demonstrate disinfection and sterilization of instruments according to OSHA Infection Control protocols. Demonstrate understanding of basic instrumentation, hand cutting instruments and basic tray set up Demonstrate understanding of restorative instrumentation and tray set ups: Amalgam, Composite and Permanent procedures Demonstrate abilty to place and remove PPE according to OSHA Infection Control protocols. Demonstrate ability to appropriately handle, use and sterilize dental handpieces and rotary instruments. Demonstrate ability to correctly set up the anesthetic syringe, needle and anesthetic solutions.
