Course Description
This course is designed to develop and enhance decision-making strategies for students interested in transferring. Students will develop critical thinking skills by identifying, comparing, and analyzing the differences in university entrance and major requirements as related to their educational and career goals. Students will examine the requirements of the universities and complete a comprehensive educational plan. On-site research/field study at universities may be required. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC: Credit Limitation: COLL G100, COUN G104, COUN G105, COUN G115, COUN G150, COUN G151, COUN G152, COUN G153, COUN G154, COUN G155, COUN G156 and COUN G205 combined: maximum credit, 3 units.

- Compare and contrast the requirements for transfer using an Associate Degree for Transfer, major preparation, and university admission selection criteria.

Course Objectives
- 1. Identify the various structures of higher education in California and the U.S.
- 2. Apply decision making and evaluative skills in the selection of a transfer university.
- 3. Describe social and cultural issues associated with university transfer.
- 4. Integrate academic planning concepts for transfer to four-year institutions.
- 5. Conduct research on university programs using educational resources.
- 6. Assess options for completion of major and degree requirements for transfer.
- 7. Successfully complete a Comprehensive Student Educational plan for transfer and/or university application for admission.

Instructional Techniques
Lectures to focus on key transfer planning concepts. Assigned reading from various publications related to higher education and transfer students. Small group discussion Access online and web resources to facilitate key transfer, scholarship and internship information and application platforms
Reading Assignments
Read university catalogs. Use technology to research various university sites. While completed, submit homework assignment that compares similar majors at three institutions. Selected higher education and student development journal articles regarding campus climates and campus cultures.
Writing Assignments
Journal reflections, self-evaluation, completed personal statement or personal insight question responses, college comparison report, Student Educational Plan summary.
Out-of-class Assignments
Use technology to research various university sites. While completed, submit homework assignment that compares similar majors at three institutions. Participate in a campus tour in person or virtual tour online. Evaluate campus for available resources and student support. Submit an evaluation of how campus climates and cultures relate to students own cultural identity.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Select one institution from each of the four systems to compare admission and degree requirements.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Submit reflective journals, personal statement for university admission process, Completed Student Educational Plan for transfer institution.
Eligible Disciplines
Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required.
