Course Description
The course is designed to help Transfer Opportunity Program students develop the skills necessary to navigate the transfer process. Topics include career selection and academic planning from a transfer perspective, overview, of potentially complex transfer issues and transfer admissions representative speakers as well as financial planning and fund acquisition for transfer students. Student success strategies will be further developed, with emphasis on new skills and characteristics including emotional intelligence, educational grit, independence, and behavioral change. A comprehensive educational plan for transfer will be completed as part of this course. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Develop a comprehensive transfer plan, which includes a personalized timeline and action steps that result in transfer readiness.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify and describe the various segments of higher education in California.
- 2. Define and use standard academic/transfer terminology essential to educational planning.
- 3. Develop a long-range academic plan based on tentative major and/or transfer choices.
- 4. Identify and prioritize the factors and characteristics which will most influence the students search for a transfer institution.
- 5. Develop a decision making model to use in the process of selecting a major/transfer institution.
- 6. Prepare for future job/internship/research opportunities as it relates to their transfer major.
- 7. Evaluate individual academic/personal history in order to develop scholarship essays, college personal statement and/or Personal Insight Questions for UC campuses.
- 8. Effectively utilize scholarship search engines.
- 9. Develop knowledge of transition and determine fit for record enhancing experiences such as research, community service, leadership and internships.

Instructional Techniques
Lectures to focus on key transfer planning concepts Student discussions of reading, writing assignments and topics introduced in class Demonstration of problem solving approaches Group discussion and consensus building Slides and/or videos to illustrate concepts Peer review Access online and web resources to facilitate key transfer, scholarship and internship information and application platforms
Reading Assignments
Students will spend approximately 30-60 minutes per week on required readings from the text, handouts, and online sources including UC Personal Insight Questions guide, scholarship resource, and researching internships, scholarships, transfer campuses, and majors.
Writing Assignments
Students will spend approximately 30-60 minutes per week completing writing assignments: 1. Development of Resume for internships, scholarships and transfer applications2. Essay for UC Personal Insight Questions for transfer applications3. Students will provide written responses assigned journals
Out-of-class Assignments
Students will spend approximately 60 minutes per week completing out of class assignments to include 1. Assigned exercises 2. Exploration of majors and transfer campuses and transfer planning resources3. Identification of lower and upper division requirements for a major and minimum admission requirements based on target campus4. Examine general education patterns for their academic goal 5. Complete assignments associated with OCC Career Resource Center, Scholarship Office, and Transfer Center writing assignments
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Assignments require personal reflection and analysis of the decision making process. Decision making process facilitates goal development and action steps for the students. Resume and essay writing demonstrate understanding, application and synthesis of integration of self within these writing conventions.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Transfer Planning capstone and writing assignments provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate integration of transfer planning process and timeline relative to a students personal goals and circumstances. Peer and instructor review of resume assignment and instructor feedback on essays using a rubric will help students identify areas a mastery and growth.
Eligible Disciplines
Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required. Title 5, section 53410.1 Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent.
