Course Description
Course is designed to facilitate students' exploration and selection of a college major. Students will examine and apply a decision making process in identifying their academic interests and develop an educational plan based on a major selection. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Navigate hard copy and online resources in gathering information for identification of an intended college major. Instructors will present and model use of resources for students application.
- Apply selected assessment inventories for information gathering and evaluation for college major selection. Outcome will have identified academic interests and goals.
- Students will develop and prepare an electronic/digital educational plan with a demonstrated selection of a college major.
Course Objectives
- 1. Learn to identify and apply hard copy and online resources for research and academic planning related to College Majors. Example of Resources include: ASSIST, College Source, CSUMentor,UC Pathways, and others for consideration.
- 2. Identify academic interests and goals related to a College Major.
- 3. Develop an Electronic/Digital Educational Plan for a Certificate or Associate Degree or a Major for Transfer to a four year university.
- 4. Identify seven decision making strategies.
- 5. Identify four decision making styles.
- 6. Identify seven fields of study from the classification of instructional programs.

Instructional Techniques
Lectures will encourage and faciltate group discussion between the class participants and the instructor. Discussion content will provide learning content for consideration for the entire class. Textbook exercise assignment requires reflective thinking and constructed written responses in preparation for peer and instructor evaluation. Individual counseling sessions will provide support and feedback for students engaged in the decision making process and selection of a college major.
Reading Assignments
1. Required completion of assigned readings from the text.2. Completion of assigned online reading materials.3. Careful reading of assessment inventory questions.
Writing Assignments
1. An educational plan specifying requirements for transfer and /or graduation.2. One to two page paper discussing results from their administered personal inventories.3. Students will provide written responses for textbook activities.
Out-of-class Assignments
1. Minimum of four hours per week completing textbook exercises. 2. Exploration of the taxonomic scheme of majors, Classification of Instructional Programs.3. Identification of lower and upper division requirements for a major. 4. Examine general education patterns for their academic goal.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will apply the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP),in order to recognize areas of study in higher education. Students will distinguish areas of academic interest and prepare information for consideration in selecting a college major.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will provide written responses to case studies related to college major selection. Written responses require analysis and a proposed concrete response. Students will discuss and illustrate their responses with peers in a group setting.
Eligible Disciplines
Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required.
