Course Description
This course teaches the study with the basic scientific theory in electricity as it applies to cosmetology, heat and light energy, neurology, osteology, occupational safety precautions of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B, disorders of the skin, scalp and hair, salon management, ergonomics. Students will learn the principles of advanced facials, facial massage techniques, hair removal and lash and brow beautification and manicuring and pedicuring and introduces long hair design. Introductory wig, hairpieces, hair addition and hair extensions essentials. Course guidelines are in compliance with the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology Rules and Regulations. This is the third course in a series of four. PREREQUISITE: COSM G022. Not Transferable.

- Define the nature of electricity, the two types of electric current, hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS.
- Explain electromagnetic radiation, the visible spectrum of light, and how hepatitis, and HIV/AIDS are transmitted.
- Identify ergonomic principles, ergonomically correct postures, and movements.
- Demonstrate the procedures for applying tips, wraps, acrylic nails, and gels.
- Describe health and safety requirements adopted by the State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate manipulative skills while working on models in a salon atmosphere.
- 2. Demonstrate the procedure for an electrotherapy facial, make-up, and hair removal.
- 3. Demonstrate the applications for artificial nail procedures to include: tips, wraps, acrylic, and gels.
- 4. Analyze the various facial procedures for all skin types.
- 5. Demonstrate the practices of disinfection and sanitation while working on models in a salon atmosphere.
- 6. Explain standard applications in haircutting, styling, chemical reformation, hair color, facial treatments, nails, and artificial nail applications.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will create a long hair design with a theme on a doll head incorporating all techniques learned. This competitive project will include a client analysis in order to do a complete make-over; hair, makeup, and back drop setting of thematic qualities.

Eligible Disciplines
Cosmetology: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
