Course Description

An introductory course in decorative concrete. Topics covered include: stamped concrete, decorative borders, staining, stencils, engraving, polishing, and overlays. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Properly stamp wet concrete using appropriate tools and techniques.
  2. Properly stain conrete using stains and appropriate techniques.
  3. Properly engrave a medallion into concrete using equipment and proper techniques.
  4. Propely prepare exising concrete for an overlay material.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Stamp a concrete slab with proper tools and techniques.
  • 2. Stain concrete using acid and water based stains.
  • 3. Engrave concrete borders and medallions.
  • 4. Refinish a smooth slab with a concrete overlay.
  • 5. Decorate a slab using stencils.
  • 6. Use a polishing machine to finish concrete.

Lab Content

CONCRETE STAMPING Students will stamp fresh concrete in lab area. Students will stamp decorative borders and medallions in lab area. STAINING Students will prepare a slab to receive staining materials. Students will apply staining materials. OVERLAYS Students will prepare surface area to receive overlay material. Students will install overlay material. ENGRAVING Students will engrave decorative borders. Students will engrave decorative medallions. POLISHING Students will prepare a slab to be polished. Students will polish a slab. STENCILS Students will finish a slab using stencil patterns.

Instructional Techniques

Students will be assigned a research paper on methods and techniques of decorative concrete.

Students will be assigned a weekly homework assignement from assigned reading.

Construction technology: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
