Course Description

The study of various aspects of interior drywall, including layout and installation of drywall, cornerbead and bullnose trim. Students will learn how to estimate drywall projects. They will tape the interior of a house using hand tools. Students will be introduced to professional tools such as bazooka™s, 7 & 12 inch boxes, corner angles and corner finishers, mud runners and hand tools, texture application using a 10 gallon texture sprayer and smaller hoppers. Students will apply several different textures such as knockdown, orange peel, splatter and roller finish. Patch and drywall repair to match existing finishes. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Determine the proper drywall materials needed to complete an installation and to estimate the proper equipment and labor necessary to do any job.
  2. Apply the skills needed to complete the entire drywall process of installation.

Course Objectives

  • 4. Demonstrate the skills to patch and repair drywall.
  • 5. Install all the metal or plastic trims materials.
  • 6. Apply the skills to finish tape an entire house
  • 7. Apply the skill to use different types of finishing tools.
  • 8. Identify the types of scaffolding used in drywall and taping
  • 9. Properly use equipment for spray texturing different patterns on drywall.
  • 10. Determine when a house is ready for paint

Install metal corner with fasteners. 3. Taped on corner beads. 4. Specialty decorative corner beads. E. DRYWALL TAPING 1. Taping using hand tools with premixed paste compound. 2. Taping using hand tools with rapid drying compound 3. Levels 1-5 taping techniques F. PATCHES IN DRYWALL 1. Butterfly patches. 2. Metallic glue backed patches. 2. Wall texture 3. Instructional Techniques

Lecture, demonstrations, cooperative learning groups, and lab assignments.

Reading Assignments

Students will read about two hours per week from the assigned textbook.

Writing Assignments

Written assignments regarding lab competency of trade techniques - to be completed primarily in lab.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will have approximately 2 hours per week outside of class on assigned reading; all other assignments are completed in the lab.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will be given various types of written tests for their evaluation in this course during this semester.  These will include identification, multiple choices, fill-in the blank and mathematical calculation. Students will be required to due lab assignments. Students will be required to participate in class discussions and presentations

Eligible Disciplines

Construction technology: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
