Course Description
The study, practice, and application of communication theories as they relate to different cultural, subcultural, ethnic, and racial groups. Emphasis on interpersonal effectiveness, including skills in nonverbal processing, assessment of different cultural interactional patterns, and the reduction of racism and ethnocentrism. - Explain the importance of macro- and subcultural perceptions in intercultural interaction.
- Analyze the causes of racism and prejudice and identify the various remedies for these problems.
- Demonstrate intercultural skills in interpersonal situations.
- Recognize the different types of intercultural conflict and select the best suited resolution strategies.
Course Objectives
- I After completing the unit on intercultural communication:
- I. 1. Illustrate how culture and communication are interrelated.
- I. 2. Demonstrate how cultural, social-cultural, and psychological factors affect perception.
- I. 3. Identify the major barriers to communication with someone outside your culture and worldview.
- I. 4. Recognize the self awareness component inherent in the study of intercultural communication.
- II After completing the unit on the approaches to intercultural communication:
- II. 1. Understand the historical origins of intercultural communication.
- II. 2. Recognize how core cultural values affect everyday behavior.
- II. 3. Utilize a dialectic approach to understand culture and communication.
- II. 4. Demonstrate skills in processing intercultural assumptions including ethnocentrism and power dynamics.
