Course Description

This course introduces the foundational concepts of artificial intelligence (AI), including definitions, basic types of AI, and common uses in daily life and the workplace. Students will explore current trends and discuss how AI is shaping society, jobs, and communication. Not Transferable.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Define key terminology related to artificial intelligence, including machine learning, automation, and generative AI.
  • 2. Differentiate between types of AI (narrow, general, and generative) and explain their core characteristics.
  • 3. Identify examples of AI systems used in business, education, healthcare, and personal technology.
  • 4. Explain the role of AI in everyday tasks, including voice assistants, recommendation systems, and productivity tools.
  • 5. Describe current trends in AI development and public perception.

This course will utilize a combination of lecture, system simulators, classroom discussion with student interactions, problem-solving techniques, quizzes, exams, and troubleshooting assignments to achieve the goals and objectives of this course. All instructional methods are consistent across all modalities.

Read open educational resource materials, journal articles and corporate reports, news articles, interactive career websites, and privacy policies.

Writing Assignments

Reflect on artificial intelligence concepts, analyze real-world applications, and articulate how AI tools can enhance communication and productivity in everyday and workplace settings.

Students will learn effective prompt writing techniques to communicate clearly with AI tools, refining inputs to generate accurate, relevant, and high-quality outputs.

Short writing assignments that demonstrate understanding of AI concepts, ethical considerations, and practical applications. Through problem-solving and skill demonstrations, apply AI tools to real-world scenarios, showcasing the ability to communicate effectively and use technology responsibly.

Eligible Discipline(s)

  • Computer information systems (computer network installation, microcomputer technology, computer applications): Any bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
  • Computer service technology: Any bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
  • Computer science: Master’s degree in computer science or computer engineering OR bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND master’s degree in mathematics, cybernetics, business administration, accounting or engineering OR bachelor’s degree in engineering AND master’s degree in cybernetics, engineering mathematics, or business administration OR bachelor’s degree in mathematics AND master’s degree in cybernetics, engineering mathematics, or business administration OR bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a master’s degree in information science, computer information systems, or information systems OR the equivalent.
