Course Description

This one-unit course explores numerous healthcare career opportunities, including inpatient, outpatient, and ancillary services; as well as professional, allied health, and athletic training careers. Students will also evaluate their own personal interests as they learn about the variety of healthcare careers. Healthcare is one of the largest employers in Southern California and nationwide. Enrollment Limitation: HLTH C109; students who complete BIOL C109 may not enroll in or receive credit for HLTH C109. Transfer Credit: CSU.

• 1. Make informed decisions on career choices by procuring necessary information concerning various health careers

• 5. List the general state and national requirements of various health professions.

Instructional Techniques

This interactive course is presented through a series of exercises where students explore their personality and how they match with those in certain careers.  Through a combination of lecture and videos, different career pathways are investigated.

Eligible Disciplines

Biological sciences: Masters degree in any biological science OR bachelors degree in any biological science AND masters degree in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Chemistry: Masters degree in chemistry OR bachelors degree in chemistry or biochemistry AND masters degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Counseling: Masters degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent. (NOTE: A bachelors degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.) Masters degree required. Title 5, section 53410.1 Gerontology: Masters degree in gerontology OR the equivalent OR see interdisciplinary studies. Masters degree required. Health: Masters degree in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, or nutrition OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in public health, or any biological science OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Kinesiology: Masters degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR Bachelors degree in any of the above AND Masters degree in any life science, dance physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy OR the equivalent. Nutritional science/dietetics: Masters degree in nutrition, dietetics, or dietetics and food administration OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in chemistry, public health, or family and consumer studies/home economics OR the equivalent.
