Course Description

Formerly: BCT C311. Comprehensive study of International Residential Code for One and Two-Family Dwellings. Topics include all residential code requirements for building a home according to IRC, including international building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire codes. Academic experiences are designed to develop skills in noncommercial construction. Field experiences are used when applicable. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Identify the general requirements regulating wiring methods, wall construction and wall covering, ceiling construction and roof construction, installation of mechanical appliances, requirements for the installation of plumbing systems and installation of exhaust systems.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Identify the administrative provisions of the International Residential Code.
  • 2. Categorize design criteria for projects.
  • 3. Identify the health and safety criteria of the International Residential Code.
  • 4. Compare the requirements relating to foundation systems.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of instructional techniques will be employed to encompass different student learning styles. These may include, but are not limited to, lecture, discussion, projects and small group activities. Instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by digital media presentations resources, guest speakers and field trips.

Complete reading assignments assigned from the textbook, supplemental readings, handouts, internet resources, and any assignments from Coastline s Library.

Writing Assignments

Weekly projects, plans, revisions, discussion topic responses that will demonstrate skills application through authentic projects.

Out-of-class Assignments

Read/View the required materials, conduct appropriate research, prepare documents/plans, complete and revise projects, and prepare for quizzes/exams and certification exams.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Demonstrate critical thinking by planning projects, and applying skills learned, as well as active participation in class discussions.

Eligible Disciplines

Building codes and regulations (inspecting of construction, building codes,...: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
