Course Description

Formerly: BCT C302. Applies the California Code of Regulations (Title 24) as it pertains to various types of buildings. Special emphasis will be placed on California State energy regulations, building modifications for the disabled for accessibility, and includes an introduction to the California State Green Building codes. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Communicate, analyze, calculate, and apply State of California energy and accessibility code compliance regulations with all current code standards and parameters.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Read and evaluate plans of buildings and installations for State of California energy code compliance.
  • 2. Assemble and perform calculations for all energy features as required for residential room addition energy compliance.
  • 3. Assess code compliance of installed energy features. Propose solutions for energy feature design deficiencies. Assist owners and installers in choosing code compliant options.
  • 4. Locate, organize, and explain energy code deficiencies to installers and building owners.
  • 5. Define and explain nomenclature associated with the energy code compliance to owners and installers.
  • 6. Locate, associate, and interpret residential energy code tables.
  • 7. Read and evaluate plans of buildings and installations for State of California disabled access code compliance.
  • 8. Perform inspections and assemble comments as required accessibility compliance.
  • 9. Assess code compliance of installed accessibility features. Propose solutions for accessibility feature design deficiencies. Assist owners and installers in choosing code compliant options.
  • 10. Locate, organize, and explain accessibility code deficiencies to installers and building owners.
  • 11. Define and explain nomenclature associated with the accessibility code compliance to owners and contractors.
  • 12. Recognize, select, and apply the different methods and materials called for in the accessibility codes.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of instructional techniques will be employed to encompass different student learning styles. These may include but are not limited to, lecture, discussion, projects, and small group activities. Instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by digital media presentations resources, guest speakers and field trips.

Writing Assignments

Weekly projects, plans, revisions, discussion topic responses that will demonstrate skills application through authentic projects.

Out-of-class Assignments

Read/View the required materials, conduct the appropriate research, prepare documents/plans, complete and revise projects, and prepare for quizzes/exams.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Projects will be completed to demonstrate competencies in the workplace in relation to sustainability, green technology, and title 24.

Eligible Disciplines

Building codes and regulations (inspecting of construction, building codes,...: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
