Course Description

This course is an introduction to the achievements and contributions of women and those who identify as women in the visual arts from the prehistoric period to today. Students will also explore the depiction of women in art. Topics covered include patronage, gender, sexuality, identity, feminism, and the status of women artists. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Objectives

  • 3. Describe limitations and exclusions experienced by female artists.
  • 4. Analyze representations of women in art.
  • 5. Discuss why women have historically been underrepresented in art history.
  • 6. Assess the ways women have participated in the visual cultures of their societies throughout history.
  • 7. Identify key female artists who were leading figures in numerous periods of art history.

Eligible Disciplines

Art history: Masters degree in art history, history of art and architecture, or visual culture/visual studies OR bachelors degree in art history and masters degree in history OR masters degree in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
