Course Description
This course will explore the art, architecture, and historical context of ancient civilizations in Mexico, Central America, and South America up to European contact. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: ARTH 145. C-ID: ARTH 145.

Course Objectives
- 1. Using appropriate art historical terminology, identify, examine, and assess representative works of art and architecture from the historical periods covered in this course.
 - 2. Analyze, discuss, and differentiate works of art and architecture through historical context and cultural values.
 - 3. Using art historical periods covered in this course, analyze, discuss and distinguish works of art, architecture and artist.
 - 4. Identify and differentiate between materials used to make art by the cultures covered in this course.

Students will be given essay exams and also write a research paper.
Eligible Disciplines
Art history: Master's degree in art history, history of art and architecture, or visual culture/visual studies OR bachelor's degree in art history and master's degree in history OR master's degree in art with a recorded emphasis or concentration in art history OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
