Course Description
Exploration of artistic concepts, styles, and creative expression related to advanced drawing, focusing on complex subject matter and concepts using a variety of drawing mediums, techniques, and methodologies. Students in this course will build on fundamental drawing skills to develop personalized approaches to content and materials in exercises covering multiple historical and contemporary approaches to drawing. - Demonstrate evidence of skill development in the use of a variety of drawing materials to effectively investigate a variety of original art concepts.
Course Objectives
- 1. Produce drawings that creatively interpret and apply formal design elements in the production of images in a wide range of media, formats, and surfaces.
- 2. Design and produce a portfolio of drawings in multiple mediums and formats that successfully demonstrates: Subjective and expressive uses of value, Techniques and concepts of abstraction or non-objective art, Experimentation with combinations of wet and dry mediums, Observational, expressive, and conceptual analysis or application of color, Application and drawing techniques for a variety of color media, Non-traditional compositions, formats, surfaces and materials, Conceptually oriented approaches to drawing, Integration of form and content.
- 3. Construct and prepare appropriate supports and surfaces for mixed media drawing; Evaluate and critique class projects using relevant terminology in oral or written formats.
- 4. Examine and describe historical and contemporary developments, trends, materials, and approaches in drawing.
- 5. Develop and express ideas and concepts through verbal and visual means.
Lecture Content
Exploration of formal skills, conceptual approaches and the application of formal elements as applied to image-making in a wide range of media, formats, and surfaces. Design, process, and production of drawings in multiple mediums and formats. Perceptual and conceptual approaches to image-making. Integration of form and content. Development and expression of ideas and concepts through visual means. Traditional and contemporary approaches to the construction and presentation of drawings. Critical evaluation and critique of class projects using relevant terminology in oral or written formats. Historical and contemporary developments, trends, materials, and approaches in drawing.
Lab Content
The design and production of drawings in multiple media and formats. Traditional and contemporary methods of creating space, form, and composition. Development and expression of ideas and concepts through visual means. Production of drawings that creatively interpret and apply formal and conceptual skill to the development of personal images. Experimentation with combinations of wet and dry media.

Reading Assignments
Reading assignments may include: Research on specific artists cultural context, methods, and materials such as Picasso, Manet, Rauschenberg, etc. Reading assignments will include chapters from the selected textbook to correlate to the weekly lecture, demonstration, and student project. Reading assignments from handouts given in class or posted online.
Writing Assignments
Written analysis of specific master drawings. Written analysis of individual students work.
Out-of-class Assignments
Out-of-class assignments may include: Library reading assignments on specific artists such as Picasso, Manet, and Rauschenberg. Reading assignments from materials given out in class or posted online regarding specific materials like use of color media on non-traditional surfaces. Reading assignments of critiques from contemporary art magazines such as ArtForum or Artillery. Written analysis of specific master drawings. Out-of-class reading assignments will include chapters from the selected textbook to correlate with the weeks content focus.

Portfolio of completed work; Group and individual critiques in oral or written formats; Written assignments, which may include quizzes, essays, exams, or reports.

Eligible Disciplines
Art: Masters degree in fine arts, art, or art history OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Note: “masters degree in fine arts” as used here refers to any masters degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also, art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing, or other non-plastic arts. Masters degree required.
