Course Description

A course in figure painting using the live model. Various painting media and analysis of light, shade, and color will be covered. PREREQUISITE: ART A121. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Create a portfolio of paintings that demonstrate the following techniques: a. Nude and clothed figures b.Flesh tones and color mixing c. Expressive quality e. Composition
  2. Apply an understanding of Figurative painting in critiquing works of figurative art.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Express the fundamentals of figure painting.
  • 2. Understand historical, social and psychological factors as they relate to figure painting.
  • 3. Identify and differentiate the use of various painting mediums.
  • 4. Solve pictorial problems using creative thinking.
  • 5. Interpret the nature and use of color as it applies to the human form.
  • 6. Use the human figure as a mode of self expression
  • 7. Understand form and value
  • 8. Understand relationships of foreground, background and negative space.
  • 9. Understand reflective light and color temperature of shadows to define form.

Lecture Content

Introductory Setup: Developing a logical figure painting palette and arrangement of colors on palette Use of painting materials (canvas, brushes, paper, etc.) Gesture painting A la prima painting Basic color mixing Figure drawing sketch book (any media) Foundation Structural Standards: Human anatomy Male/female proportion Painting the mead stressing form Posing the model Using single light source shadow (paint) core shadow (paint) Sketchbook - all figures done with brush Color Mixing: The bias color wheel and color mixing 5 value figure painting system Flesh tones and ethnic differences Triad and other flesh tone formulas Color temperature Sketch book featuring  - painted color sketches Pictorial Composition: Design of figure Abstract figure painting Painting the costumed figure ndoors outdoors Backgrounds Space breakup Involved painting problems - (one pose for several days) Sketch book - emphasizing thumbnail compositional sketches
