Course Description

Principles of Illustration applied to various drawing and painting media. Imaginative application of theories and techniques that produce original illustrations with clear communication of concept. PREREQUISITE: ART A110 and ART A121. ADVISORY: ART A120 or ART A120H. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Create an original illustration that clearly communicates an intended idea.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the illustration development process during evaluation of the final project.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the processes of developing illustrations.
  • 2. Create work in various media used in illustration.
  • 3. Conduct research.
  • 4. Budget time needed to complete projects.
  • 5. Recognize various masters of illustration, past and present.
  • 6. Understand an overview of the business aspects of illustration.
  • 7. Understand how a book is put together; design considerations and limitations.

Instructional Techniques

Classroom lectures and demonstrations, individual consultations on student projects, presentation of slides, videos and text, in-class critiques and student presentations, field trips and guest speakers, topical discussions, group work.

Students will write formal project proposals and written critiques of peer work. Portfolios of studio work will be created and evaluated.
