Course Description

The course is an active, on-site study of Architecture, Design, and Planning with an emphasis on sustainable environmental practices. Areas to be studied will be optimized based on the offered location site and will include a study of architectural design, planning and development patterns, analysis of resources, sustainable building techniques, sustainable lifestyle practices and culture, and may include design and/or construction of an improvement project. Students will participate in project-based learning opportunities and community service (where possible) and a multi-night field trip or travel abroad will be required. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Students will experience global practices in architecture, design, and planning; analyze sustainable environmental practices; and participate in a project-based design/build or service-learning opportunity as documented in a visual media format.
2. Students will gain practical experience traveling, acclimating to a different culture, and interacting positively with various communities to become improved global citizens as evidenced by a reflective narrative.

Course Objectives

• 1. Plan and prepare for travel, including researching needed items, transportation, communication, and budgeting.
• 2. Compare and contrast sustainable development practices in different locations.
• 3. Visually capture and analyze elements of environmental design for a locational context (i.e. built and natural environmental features).
• 4. Engage and interact with local communities in a design/build or service learning situation.
• 5. Assess and articulate the personal growth and challenge of field studies and group travel.
• I Plan and execute a meaningful exploration of another place, analyze and articulate the environmental design characteristics of the place, and assess the environmental sustainability of a place in contrast to his/her resident location and personal experience.

Lecture Content

Place:  Study the cultural, historical, and development patterns of target location (i.e. Costa Rica, American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Peru, and Turkeye have all been considered as probable destinations). Cultural roots Planning patterns Indigenous building practices Societal organization Lifestyle Economics and development Travel:  Cultural shifting and personal preparation for travel including: communication, transportation, currency, and health and safety. Establishing minimal needs versus wants Fitting in to local cultures (respecting host culture, enhancing personal safety, and creating positive American/OCC identities) Assessing weather and climatic adaptations Assessing transportation options and making itineraries Sustainable Studies:  Explore, study, and compare different examples of environmental design and sustainable practices.  Visual observation and documentation techniques Narrative tools (visual and written) Contact with local communities to visit and learn about sustainable practices and environmental issues. Design/Build or Service Learning:  Interact with a local community and assist with community design, building, or other service learning activity (TBD for each location proposed). Instructional Techniques

Instructor will use lectures, guided research, activities, on-site field location lectures and demonstrations, and individual and group assignments.

Reading Assignments

Reading assignments will be specific to the location and activities planned, and may include current articles, appropriate literature, and other instructor-provided or internet sources.

Writing Assignments

Writing will include a reflective narrative and other writing as needed to support design/build and service learning projects and presentations.

Out-of-class Assignments

Out of class assignments will include independent work on projects, assignments, and narratives.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking will be demonstrated in the project process, and analysis of sustainable environments as evidenced in the reports and reflective narrative.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

The visual project studies and activities will include writing, problem solving, and demonstration of skills.

Eligible Disciplines

Architecture: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
