Course Description

This course provides environmental studies students with a practicum cooperatively planned by a private, public or non-profit agency and environmental studies faculty. The focus is on providing students with an opportunity to apply environmental studies theory and zero waste applications in a realistic work setting and includes preparation and assistance in locating internship opportunities that may take place locally, nationally, or internationally. ADVISORY: ARCH A141, and ARCH A142. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Develop and practice the communication and work skills needed to be an entry-level professional in the Environmental Recycling and Resource Management studies field.
2. Apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom in a realistic work setting in the environmental studies field by assessing and implementing industry practices.
3. Analyze and report on community involvement, inderdisciplinary relations, and enviromental industry news/trends and issues in regards to environmental recycling and resource management.

Course Objectives

• 1. Compare and evaluate the various career paths available in the environmental studies field.
• 2. Develop/select an appropriate plan of activities and objectives to be accomplished during the students practicum.
• 3. Apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom in a realistic work setting in the environmental studies field.
• 4. Evaluate major communication processes in regards to environmental issues within an agency, organization or work place.
• 5. Assess major environmental industry news/trends and current industry practices.
• 6. Analyze the importance of community involvement in the success of environmental plans and programs.
• 7. Recognize the relationship between all disciplines involved in the environmental field.
• 8. Understand the role of governmental policies and programs in the area of environmental resource management.
• 9. Play an active role in the goal of achieving zero waste in a community.
• 10. Learn work skills and performance standards to attain a satisfactory evaluation for the Students practicum.
• 11. Interpret conclusions of the practicum and apply to personal career goals.

Lecture Content

Students will be matched with local, regional, or national businesses, governmental agencies, or non-profit organizations to gain practical experience in the environmental recycling/resouce management industry based on opportunities available and with instructor guidance. Outside classroom activities with recycling and resource management related community, special interest groups, and work places.  Other assignments as required by the individual practicum goals and objectives.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Problem-based learning activities (define, analyze, synthesize, communicate, report, evaluate) requiring independent research and group collaboration in an actual organization, facilty, governmental agency, or other work place.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Assignments related to obtaining an internship or shadowship position and related to work place activities. Practicum experience and evaluation report.
