Course Description
This course surveys cultures providing a foundation for understanding current global developments and human behavior dynamics when encountering cultural differences. Emphasizes practical communication skills used in culturally diverse settings. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Analyze key similarities and differences between the world cultures of North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle-East and current trends in organization and institutional change.
- Evaluate key issues and problems that develop in culturally diverse settings.
- Create action plans that illustrate effective communication, mentorship, inclusion, and conflict-management techniques.
Course Objectives
- 1. Define the term ethnocentrism and discuss the importance of understanding of the obstacle ethnocentrism creates in a global environment.
- 2. Recognize the importance of how culture dictates how to communicate, behave, and how virtual engagement affects communication.
- 3. Explain and analyze the interconnectedness between the world cultures of North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle-East.
- 4. Demonstrate an understanding of how to make allowances for cultural differences that affect interpersonal and intercultural communication.
- 5. Employ an understanding of the key issues and problems that develop in culturally diverse settings in regards to diversity and inclusiveness and describe how to improve communication.
- 6. Analyze and evaluate the ethical issues facing learning to live and work with differences in a global environment.

Instructional Techniques
A variety of instructional techniques will be employed to encompass different student learning styles. These may include, but are not limited to, lecture, discussion, and small-group activities. Instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by PowerPoint presentations, electronic resources and technologies, guest speakers, and field trips.
Reading Assignments
Students will complete reading assignments from the textbook as well as any supplemental reading based upon course readers, handouts, Internet resources, case studies, and assignments from Coastlines Library.
Writing Assignments
Students will complete two written assignments throughout the course.
Out-of-class Assignments
Outside of the classroom, students will do the required reading, study for quizzes and exams, and conduct research, where applicable, to prepare papers and essays.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will demonstrate critical thinking through written work such as essays and papers as well as active participation in class discussions.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will be required to complete one or more essays.

Anthropology: Masters degree in anthropology or archaeology OR bachelors degree in either of the above AND masters degree in sociology, biological sciences, forensic sciences, genetics or paleontology OR the equivalent.
