Course Description
Introduction to the Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting programs at Orange Coast College. Presentations of Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting allied health program and School of Allied Health Professions application. This course will only address Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting. Required for admission to those allied health programs. Dental assisting and Medical Assisting. Will also accept ALH A010 in place of this course. Not Transferable.

Course Objectives
- 1. Make informed decisions on career choices by procuring necessary information concerning various Allied Health careers offered at Orange Coast College. (SCANS: Thinking)

Research the licenses for the Dental Board of California and Medical Assisting Board of California. Explain the process of licenses application and all State Boards that must be passed to work in the field as a Licensed Dental and Medical Assistant. (2 separate assignments: one for each profession) Explain the difference between a licensed and unlicensed Dental and Medical Assistant. Compare the pay to a licensed and unlicensed Medical and Dental Assistant (one for each profession) Write a brief autobiography incorporating application writing and concepts learned inclass related to career choice. (assignment is NOT critiqued for grammar/spelling, only for degree of introspection) Read and understand the requirements for vaccines in the Allied Health Programs at Orange Coast College Acknowledge Quiz that this course only fulfills the ALH 012 for Medical and Dental Assisting

Watch the day in a life of a Dental Assistant and write a summary of the video. Report the pros and cons that you are concerned about within the profession. Watch the day in a life of a Medical Assistant and write a summary of the video. Report the pros and cons that you are concerned about within the profession. Post to the discussion questions with your concerns for each profession. You must respond to 2 other classmates. 2.25 hours per week for an 8-week session

Eligible Disciplines
Dental technology (dental assisting, dental hygiene): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Health care ancillaries (medical assisting, hospice worker, home care aide...: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
