Course Description

This course covers measurement fundamentals and scientific notation in the allied health sciences to allow for performance of specific job functions. Scientific notation is a method of recording extremely large and small values. As such, the allied health professional will need to be able to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of values using scientific notation. Converting between measurement systems. Centigrade and Fahrenheit; C = (F-32)/1.8, centimeter to inches; cm = inch/2.54, pounds to kilograms; kb = lb/2.205 to name a few. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to solve measurement system problems in consumer and health sciences using scientific notation and significant digits.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Solve problems using scientific notation and various measurement systems for allied health professions applications.

Lecture Content

1. Scientific notation is a method of recording extremely large and small values.  As such, the allied health professional will need to be able to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of values using scientific notation.  Students will also need to be able to determine necessity of significant digits in their solutions. 2. Converting between measurement systems. Centigrade and Fahrenheit; C = (F-32)/1.8, centimeter to inches; cm = inch/2.54, pounds to kilograms; kb = lb/2.205 to name a few.

Speech language pathology: Masters degree in speech pathology, speech language pathology, speech language and hearing sciences, communicative disorders, communicative disorders and sciences, communication sciences and disorders, or education with a concentration in speech pathology, OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
