Course Description
This course will provide students with the education needed to meet the skills required to provide personal care services to elders and to consumers with disabilities in a home setting. Topics include Qualities of a Direct Care Worker; Work Settings; Teamwork and Professionalism; Working with Elders; Respecting Differences; Communication Skills; Working with a Consumer Who Is Depressed; Infection Control; Body Systems and Common Diseases and Body Mechanics. ADVISORY: Identification required on first day of class; No felony convictions. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Demonstrate knowledge of and skills requisite to obtain employment in the Patient Care Aide profession, specifically: the principles of working with clients of diverse backgrounds; professionalism; teamwork;working with elders; therapeutic communication skills; working with depressed clients; infection control; identification of the body systems and disease common to each and proper body mechanics.
Course Objectives
- 1. Discuss work settings, professionalism, and working with diverse populations as a PCA
- 2. Demonstrate effective communication skills (listening and speaking) while working with the general population and depressed clients
- 3. Explain the chain of infection and the correct use of body mechanics and their importance to provision of competent care in the clients home
- 4. Recognize the 11 body systems and common diseases of each.

Students will work from instructor prepared hand-outs requiring reading and fill-in answers. Approximately 3 hours per week.

Complete fill-in instructor provided handouts. Approximately 2 hours per week.
Out-of-class Assignments
Reading provided handouts, practice of patient care skills. Approximately 2 hours per week.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Students will perform return demontration at a 75% or higher level from instructor perfomrance for patient care skills and correct responses on written assignments.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Correct fill-in answers from instructor provided handouts; proper return demonstration of lab skills and problem solving ability as evidenced by correct action whrn prompted by instructor using current standards of insustry.
Eligible Disciplines
Health care ancillaries (medical assisting, hospice worker, home care aide...: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
