Course Description

Formerly: GERO C131. This course content is specifically targeted to students who are interested in understanding the non-medical in-home care industry and/or in operating an in-home care business. Provides in-depth information about the applicable California regulations that apply as well as the real-life challenges of operating an in-home care business. ADVISORY: BIOL C120 or SOC C120. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Interpret and apply major theories and principles of aging to determine their impact and implication on the caregiving environment.
  2. Apply regulatory requirements and care techniques and provide clear documentation and communication with regulatory agencies and clientele.
  3. Apply valid research principles in the creation of a plan for a Home Care Business.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Differentiate between medical and non-medical in-home care and be able to locate and follow the regulations for home care, with a focus on California.
  • 2. Communicate with clients, assess client needs, observe and document care.
  • 3. Discuss the practical issues in operating a Home Care Business.

Instructional Techniques

The classroom delivery method includes lecture, discussion, question-and-answer sessions, small-group problem solving, and case study reviews based on real life situations. Classroom instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by PowerPoint presentations, use of internet technology, guest speakers and field trips.

Reading Assignments

Library assignments; assigned reading of textbooks, journals, and regulation documentation; practice quizzes and exercises on lesson materials; look up key terms; case studies and/or ethical exercises.

Writing Assignments

Students will complete essays or research reports that require them to analyze, interpret, evaluate, and synthesize concepts introduced in the class and draw appropriate conclusions and to present their conclusions in a well-organized and clearly written format

Out-of-class Assignments

Reading and written assignments; research assignments; preparation of content to share with the class and responses to content presented; analysis of case studies and/or review of expert interviews; responses to guiding questions on course content; self-assessments

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Application of research and analysis of case studies; reports back to the group on data and research involving the topic discussed; research reports requiring evaluation and synthesis of course concepts to reach solid conclusions.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Analysis of case studies; reviews of expert interviews; responses to guiding questions; presentations and responses to content presented by others may be assigned; demonstrations/critiques of caregiving techniques.

Eligible Disciplines

Gerontology: Masters degree in gerontology OR the equivalent OR see interdisciplinary studies. Masters degree required.
