The Emergency Management/Homeland Security (EM/HS) degree with a concentration in criminal justice is designed to prepare students for entry into the protective service fields of homeland security, emergency management, and justice administration. Our curriculum is designed to provide the learner with a foundation of technical and professional knowledge needed to solve complex public safety problems. Studying homeland security in an academic setting includes learning about protective measures governments put in place to minimize security threats, ranging from natural disasters to organized terrorist activities. Students who concentrate in the criminal justice field learn about law enforcement, the courts and correctional systems, exploring how different jurisdictions – city, county, state, federal or tribal governments – protect their communities from crime. The EM/HS/CJ program of study includes areas as diverse as disaster management, criminal investigation, legal analysis, and business communication. The emergency management/homeland security degree focusing on criminal justice studies puts students on a path toward employment fields ranging from emergency management, customs and border protection, cyber-crime, and transportation security.
Program Level Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Classify the roles, functions and interdependency between local, state, federal and international law enforcement to effectively coordinate disaster events.
- Identify, describe and analyze the wide range of threats to national security, including transportation, border and cyber-security.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills and appreciation for diverse communities to provide leadership during critical incidents.

Concentration in Criminal Justice
Criminal Justice courses at Coastline are only offered online through our Military/Contact Education Program and designed to meet the needs of our global military community. Students not eligible for enrollment in our military/contract education programs: Coastline College offers Criminal Justice courses in collaboration with our sister college, Golden West (GWC). Please enroll in Criminal Justice courses via GWC class schedule or apply equivalent transferrable Criminal Justice coursework to satisfy requirements.
