The Associate of Arts in World Language Degree is an excellent way to develop critical thinking, analytical, and communicative skills. It provides a basis for understanding cultures and languages, and therefore prepares graduates for many careers in a multicultural world. Communication is vital in our growing global interdependence and technological connectivity. Students in the Associate of Arts in World Language Degree can develop careers in the areas including but not limited to: education, business, international business, diplomatic services, anthropology, economics, political science, literature, sociology, linguistics, interpreting, translation, research, public relations, international commerce, tourism, journalism, and publishing.
The degree offers language courses from beginning to advanced level. All courses are designed to develop the students' listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing, and/or signing skills as well as to provide general overview of various civilizations and cultures related to the languages. Students will be prepared for a baccalaureate degree in an array of degrees utilizing world languages.
Program Level Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:
- Interpret spoken or signed messages in the studied language at beginning to intermediate level
- Demonstrate ability to use language grammar and vocabulary to communicate orally or by signing at beginning to intermediate level
- Derive meaning of written material in the studied language, not including Sign Language, at beginning to intermediate level
- Compose written samples using appropriate spelling, accentuation, and sentence structure in the studied language, not including Sign Language, at beginning to intermediate level

Recommended Program Sequence
These sequences are general course maps for students to finish all major and general education requirements for two-year completion of degrees, completion of short-term certificates, and/or fulfillment of transfer requirements. However, this may not be an appropriate path for all students. The two-year sequence is based on English and Math placement and meeting other course prerequisites. Students are advised to meet with a GWC Counselor to review course selections and sequences to ensure that completion of this program will meet a student's transfer and career goals.
Students intending to complete this degree need to complete a 4-semester sequence in one language.
